Questions, problems or ideas? Write to searoom@farazfarid.com. I usually answer within a few days.

Before you write

  1. In Searoom, choose Help › Copy Diagnostics.
  2. Paste the text into your email, or choose Help › Email Support to start one. It contains versions, states and counts, but no paths, no file or app names and no license key.
  3. Describe what you expected and what happened instead.

Setup and permissions

Help › Setup and Permissions… shows the setup again: Full Disk Access, notifications and opening at login, each with why Searoom asks and what it does not do. Help › Open Full Disk Access Settings goes straight to the right place in System Settings.

System requirements

  • macOS 26 or later, Apple silicon or Intel.
  • Full Disk Access, so Searoom can measure Mail, Messages, the Trash and app leftovers in the Library.
  • An internet connection only for app updates, the license check and Searoom's own updates.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe?

Searoom never deletes files. Everything you clean up goes to the Trash and is listed under Cleaned Up, where Put Back returns it to where it was, until you empty the Trash. Searoom never cleans up on its own and shows you first what goes to the Trash. A fixed block list keeps system folders, iCloud Drive, the keychains and your Mail out of every plan; it is checked when the plan is made and again right before each move. Two actions cannot use the Trash: deleting local Time Machine snapshots and removing unavailable simulators. Searoom says so and asks before either.

What is “System Data”?

It is what macOS does not assign to another category in System Settings › General › Storage: caches, logs, local Time Machine snapshots, iPhone backups, developer data, virtual memory and macOS itself. Searoom breaks it down item by item and says “not disclosed” where macOS does not tell a size. More about System Data.

Do I need it if I have Pearcleaner?

Pearcleaner is a free, open source app for removing apps with their leftovers. If that is all you need, it may well be enough. Searoom covers more ground: it explains every storage item including System Data, cleans caches, logs and old installers with a journal you can undo, keeps your apps updated, and has a page for developer data. Try it for 14 days and decide.

Why does Searoom need Full Disk Access?

macOS protects folders like Mail, Messages, the Trash and parts of the Library. Without Full Disk Access, Searoom cannot measure them or find leftovers there, and says so. With it, Searoom reads sizes and names, never file contents. Full Disk Access takes effect after Searoom restarts; the setup offers that.

What happens after the 14 days?

Searoom stays free for good with the overview, every explanation, cleaning caches, logs, the Trash and old installers, and removing apps with their leftovers. Pro adds app updates, the Developer page, leftovers of apps already gone, free space in the menu bar and the weekly report, for €29 once, on 2 Macs, with all 1.x updates. Putting things back from Cleaned Up always works.

What leaves my Mac?

Only this: Homebrew's public cask list is downloaded, the App Store lookup gets the identifiers of your App Store apps, each app's own update feed is asked at its developer, Dodo Payments checks your license key (key and Mac name), and this website delivers Searoom's own updates. The first three only during the trial and with Pro. No file names, no file contents, no usage data. Details in the privacy policy.

Will it make my Mac faster?

Searoom frees disk space and keeps your apps up to date. It does not promise speed, and it has no “free up RAM” or “optimize” button, because macOS manages memory itself.

How much space will I get back?

That depends on your Mac. Searoom shows what each item takes before you clean up. On APFS, space is usually freed only once the Trash is emptied, so Searoom measures the gain after that and shows the measured number. Space macOS frees on its own (“purgeable”) is shown separately and never counted as Searoom's work.

How does “Copy Diagnostics” work?

Choose Help › Copy Diagnostics. Searoom copies versions, states and counts to the clipboard, always in English: app and macOS version, whether Full Disk Access is on, the license state, when it last measured and how many apps and updates it found. It contains no paths, no file or app names and no license key. Paste it into your email to [email protected], or use Help › Email Support.

An update was not installed. Why?

Searoom replaces an app only when the new version has the same identifier and team ID, its signature checks out with codesign, Gatekeeper accepts it and, where the app has a key for it, the EdDSA signature is valid. If one of these does not match, Searoom stops, leaves the installed app as it is and tells you which check failed. For Homebrew apps it names the brew command to run in Terminal to see why. App Store apps are always updated by the App Store.

When does Searoom ask for my administrator password?

Only for single actions that need it, each with its own sentence: deleting local Time Machine snapshots, moving leftovers outside your home folder to the Trash (for example in /Library/LaunchDaemons), and putting the new version of an app into Applications when your account cannot write there.

How do I move my license to another Mac?

One license works on 2 Macs at a time. For a third Mac, choose Settings › License › Remove from This Mac on one of them first, then activate the key on the new one.

Why is the size of Time Machine snapshots “not disclosed”?

macOS does not tell how much space a local snapshot takes, and a guess would not be honest. Searoom shows the count and the dates. More about local snapshots.

Which languages?

English and German.
